Call for applications: InteRussia Fellowship Program in International Relations

The Gorchakov Fund in partnership with MGIMO and Rossotrudnichestvo begin accepting applications for the traditional program of scientific and research fellowship for foreign experts "InteRussia". The areas of fellowship include history and theory of international relations, political science and foreign studies.

InteRussia provides a unique opportunity to practice analytical skills, learn first-hand about the Russian scientific and expert agenda, visit governmental agencies, participate in expert discussions organized at higher educational institutions, thinks tanks and non-governmental organizations, and work under the individual guidance of academic advisors represented by top professors of MGIMO.

Dates of the coming program: October 16 - November 26, 2022

Location: Moscow, Russia

Language of the fellowship: English

Topic of the new fellowship program: “Policies of Great and Middle Powers in Eurasia”.

Potential research topics of the fellowship (applicants can propose their own topics):

  • China's presence in Central Asia
  • The role of the EU in the U.S.-China confrontation and opportunities for European consolidation on the ground of the anti-Chinese opposition
  • U.S. and EU policies in the "countries of shared neighbourhood" (Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan)
  • Turkish policy in the post-Soviet space
  • The “green agenda” in the policies of western countries towards Eurasian countries
  • Sanctions and trade wars as modern tools of global competitive confrontation

Application deadline for applications: August 20 at 11:59 pm Moscow Standard Time.

Results of the competition will be announced on September 12. All candidates will be notified about the results by e-mail.

The final result of the fellowship will include an individual research study of 15 000 - 25 000 characters (with spaces) written by an intern in English according to an individual research plan.

Who can apply?

Applicants, who meet the following requirements at the time of the application deadline, will be able to participate in the competition:

  • foreign citizenship;
  • age 25-35;
  • non-residents of Russia;
  • strong/professional knowledge of English (at least C1 level);
  • submission of an individual research plan on the selected topic in accordance with the requirements listed in the application form;
  • absence of any employment or other relations with MGIMO (including part-time employment; the applicants should not have been part of a PhD program at MGIMO or defended their theses at MGIMO);
  • an academic degree or a PhD degree or current postgraduate studies.

Selection of the applicants for the fellowship will be based on results of the competition. The contest criteria include:

  • academic level, relevance, level of detail and feasibility of the applicant's research plan;
  • publication activity of the applicant;
  • academic level of the applicant's publications;
  • nature of recommendations received;
  • other research and expert activities of the applicant (participation in conferences, grants awarded, academic fellowships, expert publications, comments in the media, etc.);
  • interview results (in the online format).

How to participate?

Fill out an application form on the website of the Gorchakov Fund after registering on the Fund's website.

Terms of participation:

The organizers will cover:

  • travel expenses to/from Moscow;
  • double accommodation in the MGIMO dormitory;
  • visa support;
  • a scholarship for the duration of the fellowship in the amount of 45,000 rubles.

The participants are responsible for:

  • meals during the fellowship;
  • PCR test (if needed);
  • medical insurance.
