On April 2, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) hosted the official opening of the first InteRussia fellowship in Oriental Studies. The program brings together young specialists in archaeology, history, and political sciences from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Egypt, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Sudan, and Uzbekistan.
The fellows were welcomed by Dr. Vitaly Naumkin, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies; Dr. Alikber Alikberov, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies; Dr. Vasily Kuznetsov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies; and Victoria Karslieva, Deputy Executive Director of the Gorchakov Fund.
"The InteRussia fellowship stands out in at least three aspects. Firstly, for our partners and colleagues, it is an opportunity to become acquainted with Russian research and academic traditions. Secondly, it allows participants to deepen their understanding of research efforts taking place in various countries and to promote our own findings and methodological approaches. Finally, the fellowship provides a chance to reflect on the current state of knowledge in our fields of study. It is particularly valuable that the program includes scholars from countries whose ties with Russia are often complicated by various circumstances. For example, this year, several specialists arrived from Sudan. At the same time, it is important that these interns represent a wide range of research areas," — emphasized Vasily Kuznetsov in his speech.
Following the opening ceremony, Vasily Kuznetsov delivered a lecture introducing the participants to the history and main areas of the Institute’s activity.
During the program, fellows will take part in conferences and expert discussions at leading universities and analytical centers in Moscow and St. Petersburg, visit museums and archaeological sites, and develop a research project under the guidance of scholars from the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS.
The InteRussia fellowship in Oriental Studies is implemented by the Mezhdunarodniki Autonomous Non-Profit Organisation in cooperation with the Gorchakov Fund and Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the grant support from the Presidential Grants Foundation.
