On 23 June, participants of the InteRussia Fellowship in Archaeology visited the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics in Dubna, one of the scientific divisions of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), an international research center conducting advanced studies in nuclear physics and related disciplines.
During the visit, the fellows attended a lecture on the principles of nuclear reactor operation and learned about the application of neutron-based research methods in archaeology. These techniques enable scientists to examine the composition and structure of artifacts without causing damage, providing valuable information about their origin, age and history.
The participants also visited the office of the laboratory’s first director, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ilya Frank, whose scientific legacy continues to play an important role in the development of neutron research.
The programme concluded with a guided tour of the research reactor, where the fellows gained first-hand insight into the technologies that support both fundamental scientific research and interdisciplinary applications.
The visit highlighted the growing role of advanced scientific methods in the study and preservation of cultural heritage and demonstrated the potential for collaboration between archaeology and nuclear physics.
